William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. The Summer of 2012 is your chance to see Shakespeare's funny, farcical and fantastic comedy featuring Festival favorite David Coffee as Sir John Falstaff. Directed by Trinity Shakespeare Artistic Director T. J. Walsh, who directed the Festival's acclaimed productions of Twelfth Night, Hamlet and As You Like It, Trinity's production embraces the humor, silliness and love that brims to the top in Shakespeare's laughing take on life in the small town of Windsor.
In Shakespeare's broad smile at Elizabethan life, the larger than life Sir John Falstaff uses every device at his disposal: trickery, flattery and bribery to woo the two lovely Merry Wives (Mistresses Page and Ford of the title) into his rather expansive sphere of influence. Of course the happily married Merry Wives, knowledgeable in the ways of romance, launch their own campaign of trickery, flattery and bribery to give to Sir John Falstaff his just deserts. We are introduced to a gaggle of Shakespeare's most comic of characters including the clever Mistress Quickly; the wonderfully manic Dr. Caius; the Welsh parson Sir Hugh Evans whose mastery of the English language is several years into the future; and the husbands: the jealous Frank Ford and the loyal George Page, all of whom stumble head-long into the Merry Wives manipulation of Sir John Falstaff toward his satisfying reckoning with poetic justice. The Merry Wives of Windsor is Shakespeare at his most wonderful in this comedy of Elizabethan life.
